Good morning. Lex and I are very excited to have him join your room. This notebook currently serves as a communication too between our home and Lex's daycare to help coordinate his day If you have another tool we should use please let us know.
I believe I gave you all the supplies and his bag of extra clothes With his spare clothes there is a pair of blue shorts. When Lex gets worked up or nervous he like to rub the tag on it, it helps settle him.
If you have any comments to pass along to daycare or to us at home please let us know. Lex is currently at New Horizons Children's Center but will be transitioning to Tender Loving Care center in mid month.Have a good day-Catie
So far Lex is having a great day! He sat nicely during breakfast and ate some dry cereal, drank milk with a straw and ate some of his muffin. He was dry the first time we checked. Does he sit on the potty? I will probably have him go with one of my potty trained boys so he has a model.
I will be sending home a traveling folder with his daily schedule summary in it and if there are any notes I will check the box and then write in the enclose paper- usually goal related so please leave in there. I am changing my daily sheets so today's will be a little different.Feel free to write in the folder.
We are just getting ready to start our more structured activities so I will let you know how the rest of the day goes. Thank you for the info about the shorts.
Almost getting on the bus. Loved the ball pit in the sensory room. Had a hard time cooling down and leaving - would walk and fall. I helped him up and we would walk a few steps and then fall. He cried during our 3 minute circle time (we sang songs and counted to 5) and cried during our table time and until we left. But this is kind of typical. I saw many smiles and interaction with other kids especially in the ball pit - lots of giggles. I think it will take some getting used to but he will be a great new friend!

Lex arrived at daycare around noon. Had a rough start. Really wound up. He would not sit at first for lunch then we noticed he had a bm , we don't know how long he had it, he had a red butt. After we changed him he went back to the table. He barely ate anything. Spilled apple sauce all over his pants. Lex had a rough time going down for a nap. He finally fell asleep at 1.

9/22/10-9/29/10
Lex had a more difficult time falling asleep last night but got to sleep in a bit this morning. Overall, he had a good evening/night. We did see the rash on his neck and chest, his dr saw him on Monday and thinks it's probably just a viral rash since he's had cold symptoms recently, but please let us know if he starts feeling warm or acting sick.

Lex had a good night and got a little more sleep than normal, probably since he didn't nap yesterday.
He has been in a very good mood this morning and has been brushed and had joint compressions done.

Lex had a good weekend with lots of sensory type activities. He napped well yesterday and went to bed on time without a fuss. Nate is going to try to brush Lex before drop off.
**For Friday Catie will meet the bus for pick up at 8am. The aide is unsure about how 11:30am drop offs will go.**-Catie
Lex had a pretty good day. He had a hard time leaving his friends alone; hair pulling, hitting and pushing. We brushed him before nap. Paula was here today. He only had like an hour nap today.

Sarah and Tracy,
Lex had a very busy weekend and didn't sleep as well as he normally does. I did make time for him to be brushed this morning. We also thought of something that could be done instead of brushing. When we are out and don't have his brush we either give him a tight hug or rub his back, arms and legs with a bit of pressure behind it, both seem to get similar results to brushing. We'll keep brainstorming ideas to help with the discipline concerns.

We had a couple of ideas that might make the day go smoother:
-Keep his shorts in his reach, he uses them to self soothe.
-At meal times if giving him the red place setting will help calm him down and get him to sit and eat longer we'd like you to try it.
-Red is his favorite color so when it's project time if he could at least start with red that might hold his attention longer. CW
Lex had a really good morning. Tracy was able to brush Lex at circle time today and he sat the whole circle time. When it came to project time he didn't want nothing to do with it. We tried a couple different times but he was content playing by himself somewhere else so we just let him be. But the main thing today is we have had an average of 7 kids today and he just seems to do so well with a lower amount of kids. When Lex was done eating he took his bib off and went and laid himself down on his nap mat and put himself to sleep. Lex slept from 12:30 to 3. Had a good afternoon. There were 5 other kids this afternoon with Lex

**This note was sent on Lex's third day in the 2 year old room, after not knowing what happened during the previous 2 days but that he'd been clinging to his teacher Lisa at pick up.**

My name is Catie, my son is Lex. As you are probably aware Lex has some developmental delays and problems with certain sensory situations that sometimes cause him to act out and be aggressive to the other kids. He knows this behavior is not tolerated and currently we use a technique where we tell him no and what he did wrong followed by an apologetic hug to the person he harmed.
I want to start using this notebook as a ways of communication about his day (good, bad, no nap, etc) to keep us both on the same page since Lex will be starting 3k at Cooper on October 1st and I'm sure that added change will stress him out a bit too.

If he don't get a certain color setting he will throw them to the ground, also dumping out toys or throwing them and not wanting to pick them up. When it is circle time I attempt to have Lex sit but he will only do it for a very short period of time and I can't force him to sit cause then it causes disruption for the other kids. Project time he really doesn't seem to have any desire to want to do the project. He likes to be off playing. But as you guys may know this room can hold 15 kids and we have a lot of kids in this room and us as teachers can only do our best. It may seem like a lot but I am sure it will take Lex time to adjust. We just want you guys to be aware of what we see here at daycare. He had a really short nap today. Any question please call us.

Getting started
Best way to start is with a little back ground info.
October 2007 Lex was born a 9lb 4.1oz baby by c-section, due to low glucose levels he was given sugar water while Mom was in recovery. Once Mom was out of recovery the attempts at breast feeding began and didn't go so well. Mom decided pumping was the way to go since it didn't seem like Lex was getting much but we supplemented with formula. Formula wasn't a good start, ended up having to rule out pyloric stenosis and feed him in small bursts.
At around 15 months old Mom noticed that speech wasn't coming as easily as it should be but the dr said to give Lex more time, that he's a boy they talk slower. At the 18 month well baby check up it was still a concern so Mom convinced the dr to at least send Lex to get his speech evaluated. Speech services were found to be needed and were started a couple of months later after (had to wait for insurance to say okay). We did speech at the hospital for a couple months when they decided to have Lex evaluated for some sensory concerns. That evaluation led to the diagnosis of Sensory Processing Disorder. With dual problems and not seeing much in the way of approvement Mom started looking into other services and found Birth to 3. Birth to 3 sent their own evaluation team and agreed that Lex needed services. We started with just speech services and added occupational therapy shortly after. Lex was doing floor time with David for speech and that seemed to improve him drastically and we were taught how to do "brushing protocol" to help control his sensory seeking behavior. This training carried over to daycare. While at daycare he had two wonderful teachers, Dani and Lisa, that Lex was very comfortable with and they just seemed to know how to handle him even on his really bad days. Moving to a different room did nothing good for him but it was short term. Lex started school on October 1st and transferred over to another daycare. The transistion to school and daycare started just before Nate moved out so Lex's life was in an upheaval but from here on out is the communications from me and school and I'll throw in stuff I see or was mentioned at daycare as we go..
